Verizon’s stance against “net neutrality”

Rich Brooks of flyte.biz (and my favorite web designer / developer) hit a chord when he recently wrote about Verizon’s attempt to block free speech across their mobile network.  Rich writes:

Verizon’s War on Free Speech

Verizon gave us a sneak peek into what the US and the state of free speech might look like in a few years after we’ve all forgotten that Net Neutrality has been done away with.

In a New York Times article, Verizon Blocks Messages of Abortion Rights Group, it was reported that Verizon has decided not to allow an abortion rights group "to make Verizon’s mobile network available for a text-message program…"   Read Rich’s entire post here.

Now, as Rich said, it doesn’t matter whether you are for or against abortion.  The issue has to do with our rights to communicate with others about subjects we choose to communicate about.

Althought they later reversed their decision, it’s frightening to think that private companies (as opposed to the government) like Verizon can do such a thing, and why it’s essential that we bring back Net Neutrality, to continue to protect our constitutional rights in a world that our founding fathers never even dreamed of.

  1. I totally agree with you and I will now purchase an iPhone with AT&T instead of Verizon. Outrageous!
