Business Motivation: Making things happen

business motivationOne of the biggest challenges for small business owners is to keep the fire going, no matter what is going on. But sometimes things happen that lower the flame or even snuff it out completely. When the buck stops with you, it can be hard to keep your head in the right place and keep pluggin’, especially if things like financial woes, employee challenges, production or delivery problems, partnership conflicts or client issues are getting you down. As a result, things start to stagnate, marketing often falls by the wayside, and it just starts to feel old. If you’re not feeling much business motivation right now, read on, here are some ways to re-light the fire again:

1. Re-acquaint yourself with why you’re doing all of this. Getting back in touch with the reasons you started your business, and the hopes, plans, dreams and passion you have for it can go a long way in igniting business motivation again.
2. Tackle your challenges, head on. The typical business owner has so much to do that it is sometimes easy to hide behind the mountain of work and ignore the issues that are depleting you mental energy and stealing whatever business motivation you may have. Instead of ignoring these problems, deal with them as soon as possible, find workable solutions and keep the energy flowing.
3. Reach out to new prospects, even if you don’t feel like it. If lack of business motivation has stopped you from reaching out to new prospects, networking, or even just keeping in touch with existing or former clients, realize that this is a habit you don’t want to cultivate. Reach out. Forge new relationships. It not only makes things more interesting, but helps spread the word about your services and brings in more business. Motivation increases when you make things happen.
4. Don’t go it alone. If business motivation has been lacking, don’t stay cooped up in your office or isolate yourself. Instead, connect with other business owners and share your experiences and your successes and learn from each others mistakes; or work with a business coach to help you stoke that business motivation fire again.
